LEx events

As part of our commitment to the LEx movement, we have a regular programme of free (mostly now online) events that are designed to support you with your work and yourself.

Network Events for LEx Leaders working in the Migrant & Refugee Sector

The LEx Movement M&R Network is fast mobilising. Let’s connect and uplift our collective work. Let’s connect and uplift our collective work. Join M&R LEx Leader Ali Torabi for a relaxed cup of tea and get to know other LEx leaders in your local area.

These LEx M&R regional Network events will be facilitated by M&R LEx leader Ali Torabi and will be a safe and dedicated space exclusively for change-makers, leaders, activists, entrepreneurs, and innovators who have direct personal experience of the UK immigration system. It will be an opportunity for us to connect with one another, learn from each other, elevate each other’s work, connect our campaign and policy work, and to grow a community that is rooted in our shared heritage of migration and resistance.

Ali will also share exciting opportunities and information about the free ECoC capacity building support available for members of the LEx Movement’s Migration and Refugee Network, and also explain how you can lead future activities and collaborations. This is a Movement Network led by and for M&R LEx leaders.

We know that immigration policies and border controls in the UK are part of a long history of racism and xenophobia that can be traced back to the colonial era, and we know that the impact of Covid-19 and the Black Lives Matter uprisings on migrant and refugee communities are part of this legacy. We hope these events can be a safe space for you to unpack some of the issues you and your communities are facing at a local and national level, share experiences, cultivate solidarity and community with each other, and help further our collective work and wisdom as migrant and refugee LEx leaders.

Ali Torabi: Ali came to the UK as an asylum seeker in 2005 and finally became a naturalised citizen in 2018. For the past three years, Ali has worked as the Brexit Lead for the Trades Union Congress. Outside of the day job, he was the founding chair of EachOther (formerly RightsInfo), is a trustee of Safe Passage International and is an organiser with CharitySoWhite. Recently Ali has been appointed as an external grants committee member for Justice Together Initiative.

These events are free, and for LEx leaders and Members of the Lived Experience Leaders Movement (LEx Movement) based in London, Scotland or Wales with lived experience of the immigration system.

Please note, these events are open to social leaders who are activating their direct lived experience (past or present) to inform and shape their work to directly benefit the communities they share those experiences with. E.g., migrant and refugee leaders supporting migrant and refugee communities. This does not include practitioners and allies without lived experience who are working in the immigration system (we consider this practice experience and not ‘lived’ experience).
